Our Mission

SFQFF was born from the shared passion of filmmakers determined to redefine what a queer film festival can be. Since its inception, we have remained steadfast in our commitment to merit-based selection, focusing on the quality and vision of each project rather than the names attached to it. By breaking away from traditional constraints, we provide an alternative platform where diverse, authentic, and groundbreaking stories can thrive.

SFQFF is committed to providing an inclusive platform for LGBTQ+ filmmakers to share bold, innovative, and authentic stories. We aim to foster a creative space where filmmakers are celebrated for their unique perspectives, regardless of premiere status, budget, or industry connections.

We believe that every filmmaker deserves a chance to be seen and heard, especially those who challenge conventions and embrace creative risks. Unlike other festivals that conform to mainstream industry standards, SFQFF champions out-of-the-box thinkers and projects that might otherwise go unnoticed. Our festival is “by filmmakers, for filmmakers,” ensuring a genuine understanding of the challenges and triumphs of creating art in an evolving industry.

The SFQFF Ethics Charter: "By Filmmakers, Not For Ourselves"

At SFQFF, we believe that the credibility of a film festival is its only true currency. To ensure that every laurel we award carries absolute weight in the industry, we adhere to a strict Non-Self-Programming Policy:

  • Conflict of Interest Firewall: No film directed or produced by the Festival Founder, Executive Director, or any member of the primary Selection Committee will be screened or programmed at SFQFF as long as they hold office.

  • Merit-First Selection: We exist to champion the community, not as a vanity showcase for our own leadership. By subjecting our own personal work to the same rigorous "gatekeeping" of third-party festivals, we maintain the highest standards of integrity for the artists we host.

  • Transparency in Curation: Our selection process is designed to discover "Out-of-the-Box" thinkers. We do not "pre-sell" slots to alumni or industry partners. Every film is viewed with a fresh eye, ensuring that our lineup reflects the true diversity and innovation of the current Queer cinematic landscape.
